1. Showers and Tubs: It is important to have lighting that is bright enough  for safety and bright enough for shaving. Make sure to use light fixtures that are specifically designed  to be used in wet areas.

2. Create a nightlight by illuminating the floor in the toe space below vanities and cabinets.

3. Good mirror lighting surrounds the face with light and provides light from all sides that minimizes shadows under the chin, eyes, cheeks, and forehead. A wall sconce on either side of the mirror and do this nicely. Or use theatrical style lighting stripped along the sides and top of the mirror. You can even fit fixtures right to the mirror with a little extra planning.

4. Layers of light help to reduce glare. The aging of the eye requires more light to see. By the age of 55, you need twice as much light to see as you did when you were 20.

5. Frosted white bulbs will also help reduce glare as will fixtures without exposed bulbs.

6. A decorative light fixture suspended from the ceiling provides an elegant touch while adding extra light.  Sparkling crystal chandeliers create a dramatic, upscale bath.

Tips To Brighten The Bath...

A well-lit bath depends on a

savvy lighting mix.

For optimal bathroom lighting, bathroom fixtures that feature incandescent bulbs behind diffusers radiate the most flattering light and color. Remember that you can use more than bath strips for your next bathroom lighting project. Try sconces on either side of a mirror, and a ceiling fixture, for balanced bathroom lighting throughout the room. Larger baths are in vogue today, and a small chandelier over the bath can create spectacular effects.
