A well designed lighting plan includes general, task and accent lighting. |
|
The designs that people are going for are cleaner, sleeker and even a little bit sexier than they were in past times. An added benefit is that these more updated styles fit right into either traditional or contemporary spaces. Lighting Fundamentals There are three basic types of lighting that work in conjunction with one another to light your home. A good lighting plan needs to include all three elements according to need and style. General Lighting: Also known as ambient lighting, general lighting provides an area with overall light. It offers a comfortable level of brightness that mimics the sunlight and allows you to see and walk safely. This is often accomplished by chandeliers, ceiling fixtures, wall mounted fixtures, recessed and track lighting and even outdoor lanterns. It is the core of the lighting plan. Task Lighting Task lighting provides extra illumination for specific tasks that require a closer view such as reading, cooking or a hobby. It is most often provided by recessed lighting and track lighting, lamps or pendant lighting that is bright enough to prevent eye strain. Accent Lighting Accent lighting highlights areas of particular visual interest such as a painting, collectibles, plants, or outdoor lighting. It usually requires at least three times as much light for the focal point as you would use in general lighting around it. This is primarily accomplished with track, recessed or wall mounted fixtures. |
